Improvisation is what happens when daddy goes on yet another impromptu work trip, toddler gets healthy just as the kiddo gets super sick, and mommy is stuck inside without running for multiple days. Insanity begins to set in, as even an hour for PiYo is way too much to ask for right now. So, I improvised. And I looooooved it.
Today I grabbed my yoga mat and my makeshift sandbag and just started moving. I moved until I was needed, and then I came back when I was done mommying. It ended up being a workout about like this, that I plan to keep/add to for the future:
two sun salutations
25 sandbag squats w/overhead lifts
10 burpees
20 bent over rows (right arm)
10 burpees
25 sandbag squats w/overhead lifts
10 burpees
20 bent over rows (left arm)
10 burpees
one sun salutation, extra random stretching added in
This is my workout space, simple and cheap:

The sandbag was made easily with three things--a cheap gym bag with strong handles ($15), 20lbs of playground sand ($2), and two large garbage bags to hold the sand in ($.50ish). I prefer sandbags over kettlebells or weights as a mom, because the kids can't really get hurt with them. You can buy a huge bag of sand and fill the doubled-up trash bags to whatever weight you'd like. Drop them in the gym bag, and it's on. It works for multiple single-arm exercises, as well as extra weight when doing things like squats and lunges. Honestly, not much more than something like this and your own body weight is needed for a great workout!
Remember mamas (because we tend to forget this as women)--the stronger you become, the faster your feet become! So I think that once my marathon is over and the heat of summer really sets in, I'll be hitting the strength training hard and shortening the runs. Gotta get ready for some Spartan races!
And all that being said, I can't wait for hubby to get home tonight so I can ruuuuuuuuun!!!!
This sandbag is a cool idea!
